Digital Matatus

Digital Matatus is a partnership of Groupshot, MIT’s Civic Data Design Lab, Columbia University’s CSUD, and the University of Nairobi’s School of Computing. Beginning in the summer of 2012, the team has worked to create the first public and open dataset of public transport in Nairobi while also encouraging adoption, usage, and improvement of the system. Within the project we have investigated questions of transit data value, data collection, interaction, and improtantly the challenges for mapping informal or paratrasnit systems in cities around the world.

Ongoing work in Nairobi  includes the development of the database and tools and processes to improve, scale, and utilize the data by different citizens.  Beyond this we aim to develop and explore the potential of these ideas in similar cities globally. We are now embarking on a global discussion to see how GTFS interfaces with these different cities.
